Annual Te Puka Hunting Competition

Welcome to the Te Puka Hunting & Fishing Club's annual fishing comp. This is where you can purchase your entry in a "ticket" form. Just follow the prompts and you will be enetered into the comp. 

We are running our 2 day traditional boat & beach comp on the 27 & 28 December 2025, however if the weather/sea conditions look poor for the planned dates, we will attempt to hold the competition on any of the dates that follow-

29,30th December, 2nd & 3rd or 3rd & 4th January or any combination of 2 successive days in the date range of 27 December - 4th January.

We will NOT run the comp over 31st December & 1st of January 2026.

The Committee reserve the right to alter rules or information in the case of admin error or for safety reasons,prior to competition commencing.

With an awesome prizepool we hope to see as many of you there as possible! Don't hesitate to sign up as a member!

 

TE PUKA FISHING COMPETITION - BOAT FISHING RULES

 

  • All fish must be weighed in between the designated weigh-in times.
  • All fish weighed in must be fully intact and belong to the Te Puka Hunting & Fishing Club Inc (the Club).
  • Categories and prizes are as specified in the Appendix 1.
  • Weigh Master and/or Committee Members have the right to inspect all slurry bins and
  • Weigh Master will have final decision.
  • Trailer Boats can be launched outside of Tokomaru Bay, but ALL FISH MUST HAVE BEEN LOCATED ON A BOAT AT SEA WITHIN THE BAY IMMEDIATELY PRIOR TO BEING WEIGHED. NO FISH TO BE DRIVEN TO THE WEIGH STATION
  • In two or more fish place equally in any category, the fish that was weighed earliest will be the winner.
  • In the event, that insufficient fish are caught to satisfy all or any of the prizes listed, the prizes not won will remain the property of the Club.
  • Prize Giving will be held at approximately 7.00pm on the last day of fishing. This time could be subject to change due to weather etc so please stay aware of the status of the competition and the weather.
  •  All winners must be present at the time of prize giving in order to collect their prize.
  • If you are not present at the time of prize giving the prize remains the property of the Club.
  • The Club will start launching boats at 0600hrs on the day of fishing and only launch at the Awhina boat ramp, If you launch at the Waima boat ramp you will have to make contact with the Te Puka Base as soon as you are in line of site of the pub on the way out and on the way in due to Waima ramp been a black spot for communications.
  • If you wish to launch yourself before this, your trailer must be tagged and parked in the very far corner of the carpark at the Southern end away from the tavern. Please note no trailers or vehicles are to be parked on either side of the road outside the tavern or in the carpark area between the tavern and the weigh-in area. This must be noted on your registration form that you will be leaving early, and you must answer comms on the first radio schedule at 0600hrs.

 

  • FISHING HOURS:
  • Lines in 5.30am
  • Boats in Channel by 4.00pm
  • Weigh in 1.00pm – 5.00pm
  • Fish weighed in or donated to the club will be auctioned approximately 30 minutes after the closing of weigh-in.

  • REGISTRATION AND PROTESTS:
  • It is the responsibility of the Skipper to ensure ALL crew members are registered and entry fees are paid prior to launching. Registration is online at https://tepukahuntfish.tidyhq.com/schedule/events/56743-te-puka-fishing-comp#event_info
  • Registrations will be held the night before of fishing at Te Puka Tavern from 5:00pm until 7.00pm.
  • No entries for boat fishing will be taken on the day of fishing.
  • All protests must be in writing to the organising committee by the close of “weigh-in” on the day

  • WEATHER:
  • In the event that bad weather the Club reserves the right to cancel the competition. This will be broadcast via the TPHFC Facebook Page.
  •  
  • INDEMNITY:
  • All anglers will fish at their own risk and agree to hold harmless all members of the Club, all sponsors and their agents and employees from any loss and/or damage they may suffer arising from this competition
  •  
  • FISHING BOUNDARIES:
  • Boats must be inside area as below:
  • Northern Mark/Line – 37 degrees 40-00s Southern Mark/Line – 38 degrees 25-00s
  •  
  • COMMUNICATION/SAFETY:
  • Boats must be able to be contacted on VHF at all times - Channel 61 (radio manned at all times).
  • Failure to respond to a radio schedule may result in disqualification.
  • All boats to provide at least 2 cell phone numbers for emergency contact of persons onboard.
  • The first radio check will be done at 0600hrs for those boats who have self-launched, if you are being launched by the Club.
  • For those launching after 0600hrs, a first radio check will be done as you head out of the channel.
  • Radio Schedule Times - 0600hrs , 0800hrs, 1000hrs and1400hrs
  • All boats must have correct number and type of life jackets for number of people on boat and follow all maritime rules
  • All trailers must have working jockey wheel, winch and be in a safe condition.
  • The Club has the right to refuse to launch if the trailer is not up to standard.
  • Ensure your trailer tag is attached securely to your boat trailer before launching.
  • Follow the coned area (one way in only) to the weigh station.
  • Be aware of pedestrians in and around Te Puka Tavern during the event.
  • Please be sensible and have fun.

 

TE PUKA FISHING COMPETITION – BEACH FISHING RULES

 

  • All anglers enter this competition at their own risk, the Te Puka Hunting & Fishing Club Inc will not be liable for any injury, loss or damage to any person or equipment
  • Conservation and MAF rules apply. Measurement taken from nose to inner “v” in tail.  
  • Registration - $30 members  and $40 non-members,  for one rod or hand line, this fee is for the one day of fishing.
  • Marlin - minimum weight 90kg
  • A more “able person” can cast the rod or line in for another person but to qualify for a prize, you must land your own fish.  An adult may help a child in retrieving the fish from the water’s edge but the child must land their own fish
  • All lines (rod/hand) must be cast by hand, no apparatus to be used for this purpose.
  • Anglers are to use rods and hand lines only – only 2 hooks or less will be permitted on any line or rig
  • Marshals will randomly ask to see competitors receipt number for rod(s)
  • All entry fish must be tagged by official delegated marshal if it is to be weighed in, the fish will not be accepted at weigh-in if it has not been tagged by the marshal 
  • You may not use apparatus such as a gaff or landing net for landing of fish
  • Marshals will be patrolling the fishing areas regularly, if there are any breaches of rules by anglers these should be reported, as it is in your interest to report any actions that are not true in the spirit of this competition
  • Any contestant fishing outside the designated areas during the competition hours will be disqualified.  Beach Fishing can only be carried out between Awhina Boat Ramp (Te Puka Tavern) which is the Northern Fishing Boundary and Mihimarino  (just past last house at end of Waiotu Road, Ongaruru, South East Fishing Boundary).

 

  • FISHING HOURS:

Lines out by 4:00pm

 

Weighing your fish down on the beach will close at 4pm  

Fish weighed in or donated to the club will be auctioned approx. ½ hour within closing of weigh in

 

  • Weigh-masters decision is final
  • In the event, that insufficient fish are caught to satisfy all or any of the prizes listed, the prizes not won will remain the property of the Te Puka Hunting & Fishing Club Inc
  • Prize Giving will be held at Te Puka Tavern on final day of fishing following fish auction. All winners must be present at the time of prize giving in order to collect their prize.  If you are not present at the time of prize giving the said prize remains the property of the Te Puka Hunting & Fishing Club Inc
